Silica fume (Densified and Undensified) Silica Fume is a filtered powder made from amorphous silica. Silica fume is a by product of the reaction between quartz and coal, coke or wood-chips and also forms in the production of silicon and ferrosilicon alloys. The addition of Extrema-Dur® Silica Fume to Portland cement produces many benefits, including increased compressive strength, bond strength, workability and abrasion and corrosion resistance. It decreases permeability and porosity and is economically and environmentally viable as it is saved from landfill. Silica Fume is available in either densified or undensified grades.
